Crossy is an AI-assisted crossword clue solver made by Ineptlyawesome. It was built for people who want a useful next step - whether that means a direct candidate, one restrained hint, or a better way to use the letters already in the grid.

Why we built it

Traditional pattern finders are good at listing words with the right shape, but a matching shape does not prove that a word answers the clue. General-purpose chat tools can consider meaning, but they may ignore enumeration, lose track of crossing letters, or reveal more than a solver wanted. Crossy brings those pieces into one focused workflow.

Answer mode ranks a strongest match alongside alternatives and explains why the leading candidate fits. Hint mode keeps the answer concealed while revealing structure in stages: definition, wordplay or interpretation, an edge letter, a partial pattern, and finally the answer. A solver can add crossings, reject a candidate, request more answers, or ask for a different explanation without starting again.

How we create the examples on this site

We write original, deliberately reusable clues or choose simple language examples that do not belong to a daily publisher’s puzzle.
We submit product examples to Crossy with the stated enumeration and crossing letters.
We check the proposed answer manually for meaning, length, grammar, and - in cryptic examples - complete wordplay.
We describe what the app actually returned. Screenshots are dated when a future app change could alter the result.
We revise a guide when the app’s workflow or the explanation it teaches has materially changed.

What Crossy can and cannot establish

Crossy can compare clue meaning with answer length, known letters, grammar, and common wordplay. It can expose ambiguity by showing alternatives, and it can make a proposed answer easier to inspect by explaining the match.

It cannot see an unprovided puzzle theme, an unchecked crossing, a special grid transformation, or editorial context that was not included with the clue. Like any AI-assisted suggestion, an answer can be plausible and still be wrong. The grid and the clue remain the authority.

Our verification standard

For a straight clue, a candidate should match the definition, enumeration, crossings, tense, number, and part of speech. For a cryptic clue, it must also be fully accounted for by the wordplay: the indicator must be defensible, the source letters must be complete, and no convenient letters may appear from nowhere.

If those checks disagree, treat the answer as unresolved. Remove the least reliable crossing, inspect the theme, or ask for another explanation. A confident label is a ranking aid, not proof.

Crossy is not affiliated with a newspaper or crossword publisher. These guides teach solving techniques and use original examples; they do not reproduce current puzzle grids or publish answer feeds. If you are working on a paid or current puzzle, respect its publisher’s terms and choose the amount of help that preserves the experience you want.

Clear explanations are part of the product, so corrections matter. If an example is ambiguous, a parse is incomplete, or a guide could explain a convention more accurately, contact the Crossy team and identify the page and example.
